Choosing the Right Type of Handbag for Work

Choosing a new handbag is one of the most enjoyable ways of shopping, but with times as they are, we all want to make the most of our money. The best way to do this is to ensure that rather than just grabbing the bag that you see and want so much, you consider whether the handbag can fulfil the role you need it for. To help do this, we've put together a guide to the different types of handbag and when you would use each. By deciding which type of bag you need, you'll know whether that bag you're lusting after is right for you, or whether it's just shopping envy that will end up with another bag sat in the closet.

The most clear distinction in handbags lies between daytime bags and evening ones. Bags for the day need to be bigger as you tend to have more to lug around, whereas evening bags might need to hold as little as a purse and some makeup. Obviously an evening bag might look fantastic but be of next to no use in the day.

So, if you're after a daytime handbag, what should you be looking for? There are several things - capacity is the first one. How much do you need to carry around? Purse, keys, phone, etc of course, but if this is a bag for work, then do you need to bring folders back and forth or other work materials? Get the measurements of anything you often carry around and make sure the new bag can handle it. If the bag is indeed on the large size, then make sure it has a shoulder strap because lugging it around by the handles all the time will get old, really quickly. If the bag might get heavy, then check that both the handles and strap are secure and well stitched.

Then comes the next item on the tick list - security, Make sure that the bag has a zip closure and ideally a fold over on top in order to minimise the risk of theft.

With these two must-have aspects dealt with, there are two more areas to focus on. Firstly, functionality - yes, handbags can have functionality. Check out the inside of the bag - does it have separate, zipped or studded compartments that make it easy for you to organise, so you can always put your hands on your purse or phone quickly? Even better, does it have its own dedicated phone holder? There's nothing as annoying as fumbling around in your bag for your phone only to miss a call, especially if it's work related.
